Once upon a time there was a deep blue sky and a mellow green earth, and the area between the sky and the earth was filled with a large space. For many many years the space was content with its life. But one day it looked about itself and noticed something it had never noticed before: there was only one sky and only one earth, and because there is only one sky and one earth, then there must only be one space between them. The space realized that it was the only space of its kind, sure there were other spaces, there were spaces in jars, and in caves, and even spaces between the hands of little girls, but there was only one space between the sky and the earth. And the space was very very lonely. "Look at all those other spaces" it said, "none of them are alone like me, there are hundreds of caves, thousands of jars, and millions of little girls, and so there are hundreds of cave spaces, thousands of jar spaces, and millions of spaces between the hands of little girls. None of them are alone like me." As time passed, the space between the sky and the earth became increasingly lonely, and it started to withdraw and pull into itself. Soon this caused little voids to appear between the sky and the earth, and the voids grew as the space grew unhappier and shrank. As the voids increased in size and number, they created vacuumes which pulled at smaller spaces, the tiny spaces like those between the threads of spider webs or those nestled between pine needles felt the tug first. All the small spaces throughout the world soon grew worried and spoke among themselves, "What can we do? how will we save ourselves from being sucked out from our homes where we belong?" they cried, "We must find a hero, someone who can save us!" And they searched the land and they searched the sea, they searched for a hero space who could cheer up the space between the sky and the earth. After searching all of the land and the sea and even in secret places known only to spaces, they finally found their hero, a space so wise and so couragous they knew it would be able to save them. They all called its name, and begged it to make the great miserable space happy again so that they wouldn't be sucked out into the void. The hero-space shushed them and told them to remain calm. The reasurring sound of its voice made them feel much better, they knew it must have a plan. Then the hero-space bashed all their new-found peace to hell, "No way, I'm not cheering our huge brother up, I want to be sucked out of my spot, I've been here forever and I am bored." And the hero-space would not hear another word from them. Soon the tiny spaces started coming loose and shooting out into the void, before long everyone was zapping out of their cozy places and zipping around the void. And what do you know? It was pretty fun! And they all decided it was much better out here in the void where they could meet all the spaces they hadn't been able to meet before. And every space lived happily ever after, except the space between the sky and the earth, but personally I think it was pretty happy too and just didn't want to admit it because then it would expand to fill all the area between the sky and the earth, and push all the happy little spaces back to their old places.
