Trip Report

I parked at the intersection of the Pacific Crest Trail and Road 9070, just west of Mount Catherine. I headed south on the PCT for about 2.5 miles and then then took the obvious boot path to the right just before the PCT passes two small lakes (there is another bootpath that starts by the lakes that joins the path I took). I followed the bootpath past the Tinkham Peak turnoff to the Silver Peak & Abiel Peak saddle and headed up the talus on the south spur of Silver Peak and up to the top. This was a hike.

I returned to the Tinkham Peak turnoff the same way and headed up what quickly became the steep, forested NW ridge of Tinkham Peak. Just before reaching the west peak of Tinkham the trail passed through the toughest terrain I encountered on the trip, some fairly easy rock with a tiny bit of exposure. The way from the west peak to the east peak of Tinkham was easy.

Comments

The wide-open trail to the top of Silver was beautiful, and the top of Silver Peak had the best views. Views from Tinkham Peak were almost as good and they did include more lakes. Tinkham Peak was much more challenging because of the rock and the steep dirt trail leading up to the rock. All through the trip the fall colors were excellent. The trail was quite muddy in places.
